The Trough Café, Charity Farm, Swattenden Lane, Cranbrook, TN17 3PS

As I’ve now had the go ahead from my doctor to indulge in some - strictly limited – treats I decided to check out somewhere new. The Trough Café was found through an internet search as my favourite in the area, The Old Bakehouse at Biddenden, is closed on Sundays.

The Trough is part of a garden centre/country store complex on Charity Farm, and you’d have to know that it’s there, especially if approaching from the south. There’s a large area of hardstanding in the car park, so your bike stays nice and stable.

The café itself has a stripped wood/armchair/boho aesthetic which obviously finds favour with the well-heeled local residents and there is a huge area of shelves with books that can be taken or swapped – CDs and DVDs also round the corner.

They serve the usual range of hot and cold drinks, breakfast and lunch.  Mindful of my doctor’s words I stuck to a super-healthy kale and chickpea salad, but they also have pasties and sausage rolls as well as cake. While you’re there you can pop through to the country store to buy a new pair of wellies or some horse medication – and you can’t say that for many cafes!
