I expect we’ve all heard this at least once “Why do you ride a motorbike? They’re dangerous.”
And I’m sure you all have different and very different replies, from detailed explanations to an abrupt “mind your own business”, but whatever your reasons are they are very personal and sometimes very difficult to explain to the uninitiated.
The sense of freedom, escapism, camaraderie, exhilaration or just your choice of commute or a cheaper way to travel, it doesn’t matter and it’s your choice, but what you can’t dismiss is the unavoidable truth that it does bring an increased level of risk. Some may call it selfish or stupid, others an educated calculation, you just need to be aware and if you’re not aware you shouldn’t be riding a motorbike in the first place.
Trawl the internet and there’s hundreds of opinions, stories and research, some factual and others irrational and overhyped. I was told on my direct access course years ago when we were discussing clothing “buy the best you can because it’s not a case of if you fall of, it’s when.”
I have, several times, and I bet you have at least once. We don’t want to right, it’s just part of the deal and I’m pretty sure we all hope it’s at low speed with no lasting damage or pain to body or bike.
So, I’m not going to preach or give my opinion, except that life can be dangerous, you don’t know what’s around the corner so get out there and make the most of it, and within in reason do what you want to without hurting the people around you.
Educate yourself, be as safe as you can, protect yourself with the best clothing you can afford and go in with your eyes wide open…….that is exactly what we do in LAM.
We provide you with a set of tools, books, OR’s, Observer’s, likeminded friendship group, camaraderie - all you have to do is engage, practice and learn how to use them to become the safest and best you can possibly manage.
