An Enjoyable Weekend in Wales: An Associate’s Perspective

As I got out of bed bleary eyed at around 6:30am Friday morning I could confirm that the forecast I saw the day before was spot on, it was pouring down!  Although a little disappointed I was committed, if it wasn’t for joining IAM and booking this trip to Wales I thought to myself I would have probably gone back to bed and ditched the whole idea of riding.

To be clear I’m glad I did, now focused I got my wet weather gear on, brewed myself a cuppa and ventured out to my waiting Tiger 900 Rally Pro I had prepared the night before.

It’s inspiring how immune you can feel to the conditions when you have the right gear, it helps to focus the mind and in doing so, how much more you can enjoy the ride.

On the way to meet my Observer at the Chievely services on the M4, rain unabating and after riding for two and a half hours I’m still looking forward with great anticipation to my ride with a couple of enthusiasts, discussing technique etc as we progress to our final destination.

We have a quick debrief with a coffee and out we go to hone our skills in the saddle.

I admire the commitment these Observers put into organising and planning our routes allowing us Associates to focus on the ride and not on where and how to get there.

We finally arrived at our destination at Llandrindod Wells leaving the bad weather behind us for a change, I’m exhausted, as a relative newbie to long distance riding, I made the fatal mistake of accessorising my back with a rucksack, I’m observing all the other riders arriving at the hotel car park, thinking not one of them is wearing a rucksack. “Silly Daddy” I can imagine my daughter telling me as she often did, no wonder I was so shattered when I arrived, yet another lesson learnt.

I eventually found my room, de-robed and came down to a well-deserved drink and an informed debrief, what a lovely hotel and meal we had that evening.

The highlight of the weekend I will admit was the wonderful group ride organised for the Saturday.

After much discussion the night before at dinner, the good people who help organise these lovely weekends took note of our feedback, I was able to join a group whose route took us to some spectacular senary including the reservoirs and dams, the slate mines and some of the most beautiful roads the British Isles has to offer.

I was pleasantly surprised when riding with our group - I believe there was around 10 of us how high the standard and pace was, I will admit I was a little curious on how consistent the riding would be with such a random group of riders.

I came away from that weekend with the confidence that the training programme that IAM develops and instil within all its members is of a high quality, I truly felt that the choice I personally made in joining LAM a year ago was without a doubt the correct one.

Thank you all and keep up the good work it truly is appreciated.
