With motorcycle theft an ongoing concern many riders rely on disc locks as a handy option – but don’t rely on a disc lock alone.
A member recently reported to the committee that his bike was stolen from outside his house during the night. The thieves had simply cut a section out of his brake disc in order to remove the lock. Presumably they used a battery powered grinder, however the member ‘didn’t hear a thing’. Fortunately, the bike was fitted with a tracker and the member was able to retrieve his bike, albeit with some damage.
Another issue which the service manager for a well-know dealership mentioned to me is that forgetting that a disc lock is attached and attempting to move the bike can damage or even warp the disc leading to impaired braking and expensive repairs.
There are pros and cons with all security systems – it’s as well to be aware of them and to have more than one string to your bow when it comes to protecting your bike.
